An Impeachment Compromise

Everyone on Daily Kos wants Bush and Cheney gone. But we know it wouldn't be easy. The Democrats in Congress don't want to consume the better part of two years trying to get it done then be stymied by the Republicans and end up getting nothing done. And of course the Republicans don't want to cross their own party, even if they know Bush and Cheney are disastrous. They'd hate to end up with Pelosi as president and 2008 further complicated.

But what if the Dems and Repubs set a few guidelines, compromises for how it would go? Such as agreeing in advance that between Cheney's impeachment/removal and Bush's that a new Republican vice president would be in place. The office is already held by a Republican, so it wouldn't be such a terrible thing to fill it with another one (as much as we detest the Republicans.) However, a part of the compromise is that it would be a Republican who agreed to leave 2008 open, not to run for election. Maybe some old, halfway reliable Republican like Bob Dole. Since he always carries a pen, he could easily sign it that he agreed to this condition, and also that there'd be no pardons for anyone.

The Dems and Repubs would say Cheney goes first, this new veep (Dole in this scenario) is immediately approved, then Bush goes. Since we already know they're 110% guilty of many constitutional violations, the hearings and trials could be brief and to the point. Everyone agrees to one standard of evidence: If it's obvious, it's true. Like water is wet, the Pope is Catholic, and the Donald sucks.

Then, with Bush and Cheney both gone and this new figurehead president in place, the compromise further says we will have a Democratic vice president (serving with Dole in this scenario). And so it happens, again someone who will not run in 2008 so there's no built-in advantage to either side. Maybe Jimmy Carter or Lee Hamilton, someone like that.

Having a Repub president and a Dem VP then helps with the bipartisan effort to get us out of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and any other country we've invaded in the meantime. No one blames anyone for being unpatriotic, hating the troops, or for not loving the flag and apple pie. By the time 2007 is over, we would be back on the path to global respectability. And with our terrible cancer gone, we'd all feel much better!

Then 2008 comes and everything's back to normal. We elect a Democrat, add to our Congressional majorities, kick Joe Lieberman to the curb as far as having chairmanships, and everyone lives happily ever after. Except for Bush and Cheney. They're both criminally charged, convicted, and never heard from again, unless there happens to be an MSNBC doc-block episode called "Lockup: San Quentin."
